Steel should remain in the tundish as long as possible so that non metallic impurities rise and merge into the covering compounds.

Despite large tundishes, if adverse flowing conditions occur steel can flow to the nozzles and no inclusion deposition takes place. Built-in tundish components help to prevent this. Including dams and weirs, ventilating bricks and window plates in the transition section turbulent flowing the dwell period of the steel in the tundish is extended. The exact positioning has to be adjusted to meet the particular geometrical dimensions of the tundish.

The impact plates which are integrated in the permanent lining remain in the tundish for several production sequences.
The chosen quality of refractory material must be highly wear-resistant to obtain a maximum period of application.
Often two plates are implemented on top of each other so that when partial wear of the top plate occurs only this one has to be replaced. In the case of monolithic permanent linings, during the lining process the area for the plates is hollowed out so that these can be fitted later. theramer has developed special solutions for this process.

Furthermore impact plates can be installed on the permanent lining. In this case the top plate is laid on the permanent lining before the wear lining is implemented. After the molten steel is poured out the wear lining falls out with the skull that has formed. Plates on a MgO basis have attained excellent results.

One of the most interesting further developments of theramer GmbH is the theramer gyration pot. In order to optimize the one-sided behaviour of the existing system of dam and impact plate or and / or casting pot and manufacture this in one part, theramer developers have constructed the gyration pot.

This part reduces steel spraying during the casting phase which in turn minimizes 02 intake. During casting, the specially designed ribs of the gyration pot create a smooth current which calms the bath surface. Further optimization can take place when the theramer gyration pot is used in the tundish with the theramer dam. This part flushes through fine channels (0.3mm – 0.5mm), thus creating a fine curtain of bubbles over the whole width of the tundish, which can absorb non-metallic impurities and transport them to the surface of the steel. The purging pressure has to be set so that the covering compound does not open and no purging marks are caused.
